Descrizione: Men of Australian 3rd Division, probably 4th Brigade, 13th (New South Wales) Battalion, inspecting from an observation tower the scale model of the battlefield laid out near Scherpenberg, about the size of a croquet lawn. The preliminary bombardment for the battle on 5 June filmed from the Australian positions across the Douve River valley. A gunner FOO on the edge of Ploegsteert Wood using a field telephone. The dirt road from Ploegsteert to Messines on 11 June, with shells bursting on the ridge in the distance. A few walking wounded, stretcher-bearers and a water cart come up the track away from the battle and ammunition mules are led towards it. A few men of 25th Division (?) rest in the rear areas in mudholes. The crater left by one of the nineteen large mines blown in the attack, filmed from above and the bottom of the crater on 11th June. The ruins of Messines itself, taken by the New Zealand Division, with trenches still being consolidated. The ruins of Wytschaete village, with the wood on its left, probably filmed on 8 June. A battalion of 16th (Irish) Division marches back to its rest area at Locre where it is greeted by its Left Out of Battle (LOOB) contingent. Some of the men wash in a nearby duck pond. Two more marching columns led by their bands return to their rest areas, probably 7th or 8th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, and 6th Royal Irish Rifles. A posed shot of Major-General O S W Nugent with his staff of 36th (Ulster) Division, followed by posed groups of officers and men of the division. A group of soldiers from 8th or 9th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers clowning for the camera with captured trophies in a rest area near Dranoutre. Men of 7th Battalion, the Royal Irish Rifles who served with Major William Redmond MP in their rest area. Redmond's grave at the Hospice in Locre tended by two nuns.
